Chromosome Structure and Crossing Over.

چکیده

A major obstacle to understanding classical genetic crossing over in higher organisms has been the lack of sufficient knowledge concerning the structure of chromosomes. Without accurate information, in particular, as to how the hereditary substance (DNA) is built into the chromosome, it may be premature to devise models depicting how that material may be recombined in crossing over. In recent years several models of chromosome structure have been proposed (SCHWARTZ 1955,1960; FREESE 1958; TAYLOR l957,1959a, 1962,1963; DE 1964), and the possibilities these offer toward a better understanding of crossing over should now be explored. On the basis of two alternative generalized models of chromosome structure, this paper proposes a new theoretical model of classical crossing over.

Some of Drosophila Melanogaster

LL present theories of crossing over tacitly assume that events in one tetA rad (at least as far as crossing over is concerned) are independent of those occurring in the other tetrads of the cell. Yet as long ago as 1919 STURTEVANT suspected that the presence of a heterozygous inversion in one chromosome pair increases crossing over in a non-homologous pair of chromosomes. The effect was defini...

Recombinogenic effects of suppressors of position-effect variegation in Drosophila.

Compact chromatin structure, induction of gene silencing in position-effect variegation (PEV), and crossing-over suppression are typical features of heterochromatin. To identify genes affecting crossing-over suppression by heterochromatin we tested PEV suppressor mutations for their effects on crossing over in pericentromeric regions of Drosophila autosomes. From the 46 mutations (28 loci) stud...

Chromosome Axis Defects Induce a Checkpoint-Mediated Delay and Interchromosomal Effect on Crossing Over during Drosophila Meiosis

Crossovers mediate the accurate segregation of homologous chromosomes during meiosis. The widely conserved pch2 gene of Drosophila melanogaster is required for a pachytene checkpoint that delays prophase progression when genes necessary for DSB repair and crossover formation are defective. However, the underlying process that the pachytene checkpoint is monitoring remains unclear. Here we have ...

Meiosis: SYP Up Firmly and Cross Over Evenly

The distribution and number of reciprocal DNA exchange events (crossovers) along meiotic chromosomes is tightly controlled. A recent report shows that unperturbed meiotic chromosome structure is important for this control, and that crossovers in turn modify chromosome structure locally.

Genetic Analysis of mlh3 Mutations Reveals Interactions Between Crossover Promoting Factors During Meiosis in Baker’s Yeast

Crossing over between homologous chromosomes occurs during the prophase of meiosis I and is critical for chromosome segregation. In baker's yeast, two heterodimeric complexes, Msh4-Msh5 and Mlh1-Mlh3, act in meiosis to promote interference-dependent crossing over. Mlh1-Mlh3 also plays a role in DNA mismatch repair (MMR) by interacting with Msh2-Msh3 to repair insertion and deletion mutations. M...
